Report Highlights
In 2008, China's hi-tech industry maintained fast growth. By seizing opportunities brought about by the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the information industry made major breakthroughs in the utilization of green energy, energy conservation, and environmental protection technologies.
In 2008, the hi-tech industry achieved remarkable result in cluster development, with the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and Bohai Rim Area accounting for more than 80%. With the optimization of industry structure, the biotech and space industries keep growing. Major scientific and technological results keep emerging, propelling the optimization and upgrade of traditional industries. Independent innovation capability has been boosted significantly. Enterprises' position in innovation is rising. Along with new progress in the national innovation system, distinctive regional innovation systems have taken shape. China now ranks among the world's top five countries by R&D investment, with R&D investment taking up some 1.5% in its GDP. Along with expedited technological innovation, investment structure has been further optimized. Entrepreneurial environment in hi-tech parks is improving, and more world-class technological and industrial parks are emerging. Exports of high-tech products account for nearly 30% in China's total exports. Thus, the hi-tech industry has become China's No. 2 export industry and a pillar industry. Nonetheless, added value remains low, and the industry is big but not strong yet.
In the face of the industry's development and changes and challenges in market competition, we release the 2008-2009 Annual Report on the Development of China's Hi-Tech Industry, which helps vendors, investors and users grasp more accurately the industry's pulse:
