Report Highlights
In 2007, China's railway transport market grew fast. Goods transport volume and passenger transport volume grew by 8.9% and 7.8% respectively.
Pushed for the sixth upgrade of rail speed, China's railway passenger and goods transport volume grew significantly. There was a notable rise in the transport of key goods such as coal. Various transport indicators reached a new historical high. After the sixth upgrade of rail speed, the railway department added more heavy goods trains and direct goods trains. This has further strengthened the ability of assuring the transportation of key goods relating to the national economy and the people's livelihood.
But on the whole, railway passenger and goods transport did not grow as fast as other means of transport. Their slow growth was mainly due to little investment in railway construction. Compared with highway, railway construction investment is in great deficiency. In particular, new railways have basically adopted a joint venture way of construction. The freight capacity of the existing national railways has reached saturation. Their passenger and goods transport volume do not grow as fast as joint venture railways.
