Report Summary

China feed market experienced a hard time in 2006.  Bird flu occurred from time to time, resulting in a massive slaughter of poultry and a depression of poultry product market.  Hog price slumped from late 2005 to mid 2006 due to a market surplus.  Hog farms suffered heavy losses and a substantial reduction of hog inventory.  Consequently, manufactured feed production slipped more than 10% in the first half of 2006 on the year-on-year basis.  Though soymeal price dropped slightly in 2006, corn and fishmeal price moved up by a big margin.

Despite the hard time, some large feed enterprises were busy setting up new feed mills, upgrading productive capacity and annexing other feed mills.  Some feed enterprises engaged in livestock production and some livestock farms engaged in feed production to pursue an integrated sequence of feed and livestock production.
