Report Highlights

In the first three quarters of 2008, coal price was rising, and electrical coal was in short supply. In Q3, due to sluggish demand, the coal industry experienced a slump, with large coal stock at coal distribution centers and ports in coastal areas. Due to the global financial crisis, the international coal prices are on the decrease, and there is mounting pressure for a drop in coal prices in China.

In 2008, merger and reorganization sped up in the coal Industry. China plans to close another more than 4,000 small coal mines by the end of 2010, thereby keeping the total number of small coal mines within 10,000. In the long run, the closing of small coal mines is instrumental to the industry's healthy development, and to alleviating the potential pressure of overcapacity. Meanwhile, through merger and reorganization, large coal enterprises seek new opportunities, build solid industry chain, and boost enterprises' risk resistance.

At the end of 2008, China announced ten new measures to stimulate domestic demand. The cement and steel industries are expected to benefit from the policy. Demand for coal will rebound gradually, thereby fueling the recovery of the coal industry.
In 2009, restructuring of the coal industry will continue, with supply and demand basically in balance. Large enterprise groups will become main competitors in the market.

In the face of competitions as well as market changes and challenges, the 2008-2009 Annual Report on the Development of China's Coal Industry released by us will help enterprises, investors and industry insiders more accurately grasp the growth pattern of China's coal industry, and provide more detailed reference information for decision making:
