Water conservancy is an important part of China's informatization development. The aim of informatization in the water conservancy sector is to fully utilize modern information technology to develop and harness water conservancy information resources, apply networking and intelligent technologies in information acquisition, transmission, storage, processing and services, improve the efficiency and results of water conservancy activities.

In 2008, the emphasis of informatization development in China's water conservancy sector included office automation, government online and e-government, as well as the "Water Conservancy Informatization Project" and the National Flood Control and Drought Relief Commanding System. The Ministry of Water Resources presses ahead with the National Flood Control and Drought Relief Commanding System, the National Water Resource Management System, the National Monitoring Network and Information System for Soil and Water Conservation, China's Rural Water Resource Management Information System, the National Management Information System for Post-Resettlement Support, E-government System for Water Conservancy, the National Water Resource Data Center, Water Resource Network and Information Security Assurance System, and makes great efforts to promote communication, collaboration and support for major projects.

At the end of 2008, China introduced the policy of spurring domestic demand, with water conservancy being part of the emphasis.
