Report Highlights

The "2006-2007 Annual Report on Investment Opportunities in China Solar Energy Industry" is designed to serve investors who are upbeat about China solar industry and intend to invest in this sector, to provide reference for enterprises to map out development strategies.  By describing and analyzing the development status of the global and Chinese solar industries, it derives the development trend of the solar industry and presents recommendations for investing in China solar industry.

Main focus:

Since the 1990s, the United Nations has held a host of summits attended by leaders of the nations to discuss and formulate world solar strategic planning and international solar conventions and set up international solar funds, to promote the exploitation and utilization of solar energy and renewable energy in the world.  Developing and utilizing solar energy and renewable energy becomes a major topic and common action in the international community and an important part of nations sustainable development strategies.

Now, China has become the world largest solar water heater producer and seller, with output value topping 10 billion yuan, ranking among the top countries by technology capability.  However, it lags behind some countries in the fields of photovoltaic and solar power generation.

In China, solar photovoltaic technology dates back to the 1970s.  In the beginning, it was largely applied in space technology, and later it gradually expanded to ground technology, giving rise to China photovoltaic industry.  So far, a total investment of more than 4 billion yuan has been made.  Under China Renewable Energy Initiative and the Power-to-Countryside Project, through solar energy power generation, electric power is provide to 160,000 users in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai and Sichuan.  To date, some 50,000 kW photovoltaic power stations have been established in this country, mainly to serve residents in remote areas.

At the 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the guideline of "utilizing renewable energy to achieve sustainable development" was established, and developing renewable energy was listed as one of the national policies. In the beginning of 2006, the State enacted the Law on Renewable Energy Sources, which gives an immense boost to the development and utilization of renewable energy in China.

The solar industry is an emerging industry with broad prospects.  Coupled with favorable policy environment and the industry characteristics, makes it a sector with great investment value and development potential.  At present, the solar industry is experiencing fast growth, providing good investment opportunities.  Nonetheless, operation risks and competition risks should be curbed to achieve good returns.
